PANEL 1

Welcome speeches

Ms Ivelina Vasileva – member of Bulgarian Parliament, chair of Committee for environment, former Minister of Environment in Bulgaria – Ms Vasileva welcomed the participants in the congress and expressed her gratitude for the implementation of environmental activities in the Black Sea Basin regions. Ms Vasileva is committed to elaborating and adopting a long-term development strategy for the Black Sea region. As in Bourgas, a European Laboratory for the control of the content of plastics and micro plastics in seawater and seafarers will be opened. Ivelina Vassileva will also work to introduce a European plastic-free zone certificate to become a prestigious label for beaches, restaurants, hotels, administrations, etc.

All these efforts are necessary because, due to the pollution of the water basins with plastic waste, micro particles of them fall into the fish we consume. In addition, the Black Sea is an inland sea and the water circulation in it is insufficient. Moreover, the Danube, which flows through 10 countries, flows into it.

Prof. Dr Sevdalina Turmanova – Deputy District Governor of Bourgas District – Prof. Turmanova welcomed the participants in the congress on behalf of the District Governor of Bourgas District. She thanked all project partners and participants in the congress for the elaboration of this project. Prof. Turmanova expressed her gratitude that the project is oriented in the involvement of children aged 7 – 16 years old in project activities. As a member of the Education Consultancy Committee in the project she is keen to support the elaboration of the Ecosystem Education Programme in Bulgaria and its dissemination in the schools in the region.

Mr. Nurai Inyontepe – General Consular of Republic of Turkey in Bourgas - Mr. Nurai Inyontepe also welcomed the participants in the first congress of the Project “Zero Waste Strategy for Good Environmental Status”. It is excellent that countries around the Black Sea are involved in the implementation of the project. Mr. Nurai Inyontepe informed the participants that Bulgaria and Turkey are working for the opening of regular sea connection between Bourgas and Istanbul.
